Saudi fashion designer looks to take over the fashion world

Dressing Paris Hilton and a Kardashian sister was not enough for Saudi designer Razan Alazzouni who this month displayed her passion for fashion at the Dubai Vogue Experience.

Alazzouni’s audience at the Dubai Mall included world-renowned designer Roberto Cavalli and supermodel Naomi Campbell. All eyes were on the young Saudi who told Al Arabiya News that her creations are unique because they “bring influences from both the East and West together.”

Alazzouni believes that the fashion industry in Saudi Arabia is booming, resulting in more competition for her brand, which she says is “exciting.”

“It’s an emerging industry with many talented people,” she says of the Arab fashion world. However, when looking for inspiration Alazzouni turns to the corporate world; “I look up to many figures in the Saudi business world as inspiration. I aspire to be as successful as they are” she said.

Abdulmajeed al-Hokair, the managing director of Saudi franchise retailer Fawaz Alhokair Co, agreed that the local fashion industry is on the rise.

“The fashion industry in Saudi Arabia is growing and will witness great success in the next few years,” al-Hokair said.

Al-Hokair believes that the industry is in its “golden years”, and although it was hit during the recession has recovered in the past couple of years.

Alazzouni says that having an appreciation for art, both classical and contemporary, sets her apart from designers with a pure fashion background.

This flair was integral in the design process for Alazzouni’s new jewelry line which she recently launched to help her brand “develop and move forward.”
In terms of marketing, Alazzouni says she relies heavily on social media.

“Social media is a very powerful tool. It has given us a lot of exposure on an international level,” she said.

Despite her presence on social media platforms, Alazzouni’s brand has also made it to the print press with her designs being featured in magazines such as Style, OK! and Design.

Saudi fashion designer looks to take over the fashion world

Lady Gaga Fashion

Lady Gaga is known for her outrageous style. She’s worn outfits made of plastic bubbles, Hello Kitty dolls and raw meat. She pushes the envelope and designers are catching on. Gaga has partnered with companies including Giorgio Armani and Supreme, and is now the new spokesmodel for Versace. She even writes a column for V Magazine. Lady Gaga’s style will always stand out and thats what I love about her.

Style Stalking: Noura & Nouf, from Saudi Arabia

“I think the international exposure to different creative entrepreneurs from all over the world who are all majoring in fashion and design is really valuable”

I think it would be mutually beneficial for many fashion designers to learn from different business cultures.

It’s easy to spot Nouf and Noura alDakhil, and it’s not because these sisters from Saudi Arabia are identical twins. Nouf and Noura’s fashion sense stops people at their tracks. From their funky hairstyles right down to their kicks, Nouf and Noura are not afraid to show just who they are. Forget looking alike, these fashion-savvy girls are here to conquer the fashion world with their individual styles.

Tell me a little bit about yourselves.

Nouf: I’m Nouf Dee, I’m 20, and I was born in Saudi Arabia but I was raised in Dubai. I’m currently a fashion design student at Syracuse University, New York.

Noura:  I’m 20, also from Saudi Arabia, an illustration major at Syracuse University, as well.

How would you describe your personal style.

Nouf:  My style is very edgy.

Noura: My style is a combination of classic and punk.

What is style like in your birth country? How is it different from the United States?

Nouf: People in Dubai are always stylish.

Noura: I style myself exactly as how I dress in the United States. The only exception is that I wear the abaya, which is a black coat I have to wear over my clothes. It’s really long but made of thin material since Saudi Arabia gets really hot. We also have to cover our heads with something. But, I must state something: whenever we gather with girls or females only, we can take the abaya off.

In Dubai, style is not that different from the United States. It’s just that we have to respect tradition and tradition is really important to us. I wear the abaya in Dubai but sometimes I take it off according to the place where I’m going.

How did you build your own personal style?

Noura: I’ve been inspired by my mother. I did not know how to shop by myself! She taught me everything. One of the things I’m so grateful for – she taught me that if I were to get something with stripes, I have to get vertical stripes as they make me look thinner. So I still take her advice.

Nouf: I know that I have some of my mom’s [style], especially when I started throwing on random pieces together. The summer before freshman year my older sister handed me some of my mom’s fashion books and I knew that’s what I would do for the rest of my life.

Who are your favorite designers?

Noura: My favorite designer is Alexander McQueen. I love all his stuff! I love the crazy but he still puts the classic sense in it.

Nouf: Jean Paul Gaultier, McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Viktor & Rolf, too many!

What are your wardrobe essentials?

Noura: Black dress and a white shirt is an essential.

Nouf: A pair of great jeans, black pants, black and white shirt, and a pencil skirt. You can work the rest out by adding a jacket or accessories.

What do you think will be the biggest trends for this summer?

Noura: Colorful, flower prints for the summer for sure! And neon colors, they’re back in season.Nouf: Spikes on heels, jackets and shirts. The whole rock n’ roll vibe
